Mouthpiece ventilation: just a home-care support?
Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is recognized nowadays as the first choice of treatment for COPD exacerbation. Compared with standard medical treatment, it can significantly reduce the intubation rate, hospital stay, nosocomial infection, and, above all, mortality rate.1,2 Physiological studies have shown that the mechanism of action of NIV in this population is the ability to sustain alveolar ve...
متن کاملVital capacity and tidal volume preoxygenation with a mouthpiece.
We have measured oxygen wash-in in 20 volunteers undergoing preoxygenation with a face mask, mouthpiece alone and a mouthpiece with a noseclip, in a crossover study. Tidal volume breathing and maximal deep breath techniques were studied with each type of equipment. When tidal volume breathing was used, the face mask and mouthpiece with noseclip were comparable, but the mouthpiece alone achieved...
متن کاملAn evaluation of home volume ventilators that support open-circuit mouthpiece ventilation.
BACKGROUND Open-circuit mouthpiece ventilation (MPV) is a form of noninvasive ventilation that can be used to provide portable daytime ventilatory support for neuromuscular patients with chronic respiratory failure. MPV has been reported to reduce the risk of respiratory infection due to tracheostomy, and to improve cough and voice function and patient quality of life. Despite these potential b...
متن کاملInspiratory time and tidal volume during intermittent positive pressure ventilation.
We measured the tidal volume achieved during intermittent positive pressure ventilation using various inspiratory times with a minimum of 0.2 seconds. Results indicate that tidal volume shows no reduction with inspiratory times down to 0.4 seconds. An inspiratory time of 0.3 seconds, however, is likely to reduce tidal volume by 8%, and at 0.2 seconds a 22% fall may be anticipated.
